I'm not sure whether the recent controversy over whether to release the photos of bin Laden's dead body is real or manufactured. It seems like it is the news media who most desperately want the photos, and this makes me wonder whether anybody else really cares one way or another. It seems to me that President Obama made the correct decision here.
Any legitimate purpose releasing the photos would serve must be weighed against the potential to incite violence and turn bin Laden into a martyr. It seems like this was the decision-making process, and I think that President Obama deserves credit for considering the larger implications.
I have been extremely critical of President Obama and will continue to do so until he makes a dramatic turn to the left. However, I think his decision not to release the photos was correct.

As progressives become increasingly disappointed with the man we helped to elect, talk of running a primary challenge against him from the left is getting louder. One progressive group has also started calling on members to withhold contributions to Obama's re-election campaign until he clarifies his support for Medicare. With the recent tornados sweeping across the South, one might think we would be hearing quite a bit about climate change. Strangely, this has not been the case. Conservatives, many of whom receive financial support from the oil and coal industry, argue vehemently against any discussion discussion of climate change. In fact, many go so far as do deny the scientific consensus that climate change is occurring. Instead, we in the South get to hear about how we've done something wrong in the eyes of the Christian god.
Climate scientists have been telling us what to expect for at least 35 years, and we've ignored them for the most part. We cannot ignore global warming any longer, and it should be mentioned right alongside coverage of the disastrous weather we are experiencing.
Conservatives love to argue that we must address the federal deficit because it is unfair to saddle future generations with that burden. At the same time, they are content to ignore future generations when it comes to global warming and dependence on fossil fuels.
