As you've undoubtedly heard by now, Mississippi voters rejected Initiative 26, the "personhood" amendment. Polls before the election were very close, so I think most of us around here were a bit surprised that the measure was defeated. This is great news, both for Mississippi and for the rest of the U.S. And yet, our election news was not all good.
In addition to electing another conservative Republican governor, Mississippi voters approved a voter ID law. Anything that makes voting more difficult in our state seems to favor Republicans, and a voter ID law in a state as poor as Mississippi ends up functioning as a poll tax.
So while I am celebrating the defeat of Initiative 26, I'm also pausing to remember that there is still much to be done here.
