There has been an enthusiasm gap on the left for some time, but it became worse after Obama's shameful capitulation on the debt ceiling. This was the final straw for many progressives, as it signaled a true betrayal of what were once core Democratic values. Even if we put the most positive spin on it, we are still faced with the realization that Obama is pursuing cuts over revenue.
For those Democrats running for reelection in 2012 who have not decided to turn their backs on their progressive constituents, an ideal campaign slogan has presented itself: tax the rich. It is short, to the point, and looks great on bumper stickers and t-shirts. But most of all, it represents progressive values. And poll after poll shows that it is precisely what an overwhelming majority of Democratic and Independent voters want.
