In the aftermath of Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) disappointing countless progressives with his behavior, the discussion has turned to whether he should resign. I cannot pretend to understand what would possess a grown man, politician or otherwise, to send pictures of his junk to strangers via social media. But I do not think he should be required to resign because of it. At the same time, I do not find the act of sending the pictures nearly as problematic as what he did next.

No, what I found far more disturbing was how he lied about it in multiple interviews afterward. Had he just come clean initially, it would have been far less of the "scandal" the media is now determined to make it. It would have been puzzling and inappropriate, but it probably wouldn't have stuck to him.

Whether Rep. Weiner resigns should now be determined by whether he can continue to do his job effectively. If not, I hope he would resign. If so, I hope the media can find something else to blow out of proportion. Hell, maybe they can investigate Dick Cheney for war crimes since President Obama still refuses to do so!

And to those who insist that Rep. Weiner's career in politics is now over, I have but two words for you: Marion Barry.
