I am not used to finding myself in complete agreement with the Christian hierarchy, but I applaud the letter sent to Congress by more than 25 Protestant bishops. The letter characterized the Republican budget as "morally indefensible," and I couldn't agree more. In particular, I was impressed with how many mainstream religious leaders are finally coming forward to suggest that values might include more than one's stance on abortion and same-sex marriage.
The Ryan budget, embraced by virtually all Republicans in Congress, is indeed morally indefensible. With the mainstream Protestant clergy coming forward, it will be harder to argue that opposition to the GOP budget is somehow limited to progressives.
If the moral measure of a just society is found in how we treat the most vulnerable the budget proposal passed by the House of Representatives, which the Senate will vote on this week, fails the basic tests of justice, compassion and a commitment to the common good.I think that there is a reasonable chance that this budget, particularly with what it proposes to do to Medicare, will prove the undoing of the Republican party as we head into 2012. I just wish I was more confident in the Democrats who may replace them.
