With the recent tornados sweeping across the South, one might think we would be hearing quite a bit about climate change. Strangely, this has not been the case. Conservatives, many of whom receive financial support from the oil and coal industry, argue vehemently against any discussion discussion of climate change. In fact, many go so far as do deny the scientific consensus that climate change is occurring. Instead, we in the South get to hear about how we've done something wrong in the eyes of the Christian god.
Climate scientists have been telling us what to expect for at least 35 years, and we've ignored them for the most part. We cannot ignore global warming any longer, and it should be mentioned right alongside coverage of the disastrous weather we are experiencing.
Conservatives love to argue that we must address the federal deficit because it is unfair to saddle future generations with that burden. At the same time, they are content to ignore future generations when it comes to global warming and dependence on fossil fuels.
