I do not think that the Republican party was ever in much danger of being labelled pro-education, but this is ridiculous. Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) is on the record saying that he would not vote to raise the debt ceiling unless "we have major cuts in the size and scope of the federal government." He went on to define this as abolishing the Department of Education and the Department of Energy.
This might be yet another opportunity for the Democrats to gain ground. The Obama administration has not made education a priority. Perhaps it is time to do so.
