I'm not sure whether the recent controversy over whether to release the photos of bin Laden's dead body is real or manufactured. It seems like it is the news media who most desperately want the photos, and this makes me wonder whether anybody else really cares one way or another. It seems to me that President Obama made the correct decision here.
Any legitimate purpose releasing the photos would serve must be weighed against the potential to incite violence and turn bin Laden into a martyr. It seems like this was the decision-making process, and I think that President Obama deserves credit for considering the larger implications.
I have been extremely critical of President Obama and will continue to do so until he makes a dramatic turn to the left. However, I think his decision not to release the photos was correct.
