What will the Democrats do between now and 2012 now that they have lost the House? Progressives generally hope that the Democrats will move to the left, while moderate to conservative Democrats want their party to move to the right. Not surprisingly, I am with the progressives on this one. Unfortunately, many people seem to be taking the wrong lesson from the mid-term results.
A Real Test for the Democrats

Interesting election results are emerging. As everyone predicted, the Republican Tea Party took control of the House but not the Senate. This should make for even more effective obstructionism by their side in the next Congress. By making sure that the Democrats cannot accomplish anything, the Republican Tea Party can position themselves perfectly to take the Senate and White House in 2012.
Go Vote!
Posted by vjack | 11/02/2010 | Congress |I know it sucks to feel like you have to vote for a conservative Democrat simply to keep an even crazier teabagger from getting elected. Believe me, I know the feeling. But no matter how disappointing the Democrat may be, we have so much to fear from a teabagger majority. Just imagine the sort of Representatives that would make Michele Bachmann seem reasonable!
If you have already voted, thank you. And if not...

Big Oil Returns to the Gulf
Posted by vjack | 11/01/2010 | Environment |
For many of us in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama, it is difficult to imagine that deep water drilling is resuming in the Gulf of Mexico. I understand that additional regulations have been put in place, but I am skeptical that they are going to be sufficient to prevent another disaster. Even more concerning, I have absolutely no confidence that the next disaster will be resolved any quicker than BP's massive oil spill. This seems like an awfully high price for us to pay while the oil companies get richer.
I also fear that the regulations adopted in the aftermath of BP's spill will be quietly stripped away once the Republican Tea Party takes power.
