The Republican party is the party of fiscal responsibility and can be contrast with the Democratic party, the "tax and spend" party, right? This claim should be familiar to all Americans. Despite the fact that it is demonstrably false, it has infected popular culture to the point where it is often taken for granted.

Consider the report by Crooks and Liars that over $1 trillion has now been spent in Iraq and Afghanistan. That is $1 trillion that could have solved a whole lot of real problems. And the bulk of this money was spent by a Republican administration.
Meanwhile, the same Republican party associated with fiscal responsibility decided not to pay for these wars. Instead, they gave deep tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans. In fact, Bush was the first American president to cut taxes during war time, resulting in massive increases to the federal deficit between 2001 and 2008. Where's the fiscal responsibility?
Fast forward to President Obama. This representative of the "tax and spend" party has cut the taxes of 95% of Americans to a point lower than at any time during the Bush administration while repealing some of the cuts Bush gave to the wealthiest 5%.
