Those who oppose reproductive rights for women are always looking for new arguments to win supporters. Okay, they don't usually end up being anything different that minor variations on the same theme of abortion as murder, but we'll dispense with that for now. Just when I thought I'd heard everything, a post over at Pharyngula proved me wrong. It seems he found a novel argument left in the form of a comment left by a Christian visitor at the IAmAnAtheist blog:
Atheists always use rape as an argument for justifying killing because they want to justify abortion. But is rape really that bad?Wow! Did someone actually write that? The paragraph continues:
It's a horrible experience but you get over it with time. If you use it to justify murder you're never going to get over it. Imagine you have a painful divorce. Would you murder your children after because they remind you of your ex husband? Of course not. I think any woman would easily tell you that a painful divorce is worse than rape but it's not an excuse to kill your baby, so why is rape? The comment deteriorates into anti-atheist bigotry at that point, but this should be plenty to give you the idea. A new argument against female reproductive freedom: "Is rape really that bad?"
